How Artisan works

Cash out USDC to your bank account

There are two ways to cash out USDC to a US bank account. You can cash out from Artisan to a bank account in your name, or you can sell the USDC at an exchange and withdraw the dollars. Neither is instant by default, and if the money is for a bill you can skip both.

How do you cash out USDC from Artisan?

You cash out from Send in the app, to a US bank account you own. The account has to be in your name. The cash out runs through a licensed partner on bank rails, so it keeps bank hours rather than blockchain ones.

There are two speeds.

  • Standard. 0.5% of the amount.
  • In minutes. 0.5% of the amount plus $1.00.

On $1,000 that is $5.00 for standard and $6.00 for in minutes. Fees can change, and the review screen shows the fee before you approve, so treat that screen as the final word. Getting your money out covers the other way out, sending to an address you control.

How do you convert USDC to USD at an exchange?

This route has four steps, and it works with any US exchange that supports USDC.

  • First. Send your USDC to the exchange. Check the network on the deposit address before you send, because money sent on the wrong network does not arrive.
  • Second. Sell the USDC for US dollars.
  • Third. Link your bank account and start a withdrawal.
  • Fourth. Wait for the bank transfer to land.

Exchanges publish their own fee and timing pages, so read the one for your exchange before you start. This page does not name one, because the numbers change.

How long does a bank withdrawal from an exchange take?

A standard bank withdrawal takes from the same day to about five business days, and longer around weekends and holidays. Some exchanges say as many as 7 to 10 calendar days when a holiday falls in the middle. How long a crypto withdrawal takes sets the waits out by kind of transfer.

Is a bank withdrawal from an exchange free?

Often, yes. A standard bank withdrawal is free at several large US exchanges, and some sell USDC for dollars at one to one with no conversion fee. Check the fee page of your exchange for the numbers of the day.

The free route costs less money than a cash out from Artisan. What it costs instead is time, because you wait for the transfer, and steps, because you move the USDC out first.

Instant options at an exchange usually charge a percentage of the amount, and some cap the fee in dollars.

Which is better, Artisan or an exchange?

It depends on what you need.

  • You want dollars in your own bank account, in an app you already use. Cash out from Artisan, standard or in minutes.
  • You are not in a hurry and want to pay nothing. A standard bank withdrawal from an exchange is often free.
  • You need the dollars today. Compare the instant options. Each charges a percentage, and so does the in minutes cash out here.

Do you need to cash out at all?

Not if the money is for a bill. Artisan pays a bill straight from your USDC balance, and the biller is paid in US dollars, so there is no sale to make and no bank transfer to set up first. The receipt says usually within 2 days.

Pay bills with crypto using USDC stablecoins covers every kind of bill. A card bill has its own page, How to pay your Amex card bill with crypto. The cost of paying a bill is on How much it costs to pay a bill with USDC.

If the dollars are for something that is not a bill, such as spending money, cash out is the way.

What if I only hold other crypto?

Send it to your Artisan address. Stablecoins and many other tokens from numerous chains convert to USDC when they arrive. Converting between stablecoins such as USDT, USDT0 and DAI costs 0.02%, and any other token costs 0.4%. Adding money covers how.

Who can use it?

Artisan is for people in the US, and the bank account has to be a US account in your name. It is open by invite while it grows, and you can join the waitlist.

Artisan is a software company, not a bank, and a USDC balance is not a deposit. Read where your money is and the risk disclosures before you cash out. Why something is pending covers the waits you may see.
