Ways to pay bills with crypto in the US, compared

Here are six ways to pay a US bill from crypto: sell at an exchange and pay from your bank, load a crypto card, or use one of four bill pay services, BitPay, Bitrefill, Spritz or Artisan Cash. How does selling at an exchange and paying from your bank work?

You sell the crypto at an exchange, withdraw the dollars to your bank by ACH, wait for the transfer, and pay the bill from the bank. The withdrawal is often free, because Kraken, Gemini and Robinhood each list a standard ACH withdrawal as free, and Kraken puts the wait at 0 to 2 business days. Instant options cost 1.50% at Kraken, capped at $50, and 1.75% at Robinhood, capped at $150. The sale can carry its own trading fee, which each exchange publishes. Can a crypto card pay a bill?

A crypto card can pay a biller that takes a card, with the card loaded from crypto. The Crypto.com prepaid card is one example. Its help page says you can load it from more than 100 cryptocurrencies, BTC and ETH among them, and its US limits article, dated 2026-09-01, sets a top-up limit of $10,000 a day and $25,000 a month. The fee list has lines for ATM withdrawals and for card and PayPal loads but none for a crypto load, and no load time is given. A biller that refuses cards refuses this one too, so it suits a biller that already takes a card.

What is BitPay Bill Pay?

BitPay Bill Pay pays mortgage, rent, credit card, car and personal loan bills from a crypto wallet, and the page lists more than 100 cryptocurrencies, USDC among them. The same page says the service has been temporarily paused since 2025-12-26, gives no date for it to resume, and offers a waitlist. Its FAQ lists 19 states and the District of Columbia. No bill pay fee and no delivery time is published on the pages read, so for now the waitlist is what BitPay offers.

What is Bitrefill Bill Pay in the US?

Bitrefill has a bills page for US mortgage, rent, utilities, internet, phone and credit card bills, paid with BTC, ETH, USDC, Tether and other coins. It lists completion within 3 business days with a 2:45pm ET cutoff, an identity check and a one-time proof of address, a limit of $50,000 per order, and 0.99% added on top of the total bill. Its help center disagrees: an article updated 2025-03-21 says the US Bill Pay service was suspended as of 2022-12-12. Check the bills page on the day, since the two pages do not match.

What is Spritz?

Spritz sells to apps and to people. Its home page now reads Rails by Spritz, a payments kit for fintechs, and an Individual tab leads to a consumer page with 6,000+ billers, bill pay in the tokens you hold, and cash out to a bank. Its fee page, dated 2026-08-05, sets a base fee of 0.5% plus 0.5% for bill payment, so 1.0% for USDC on Base, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Optimism, Polygon or Solana on bills up to $20,000, with a $4 minimum. Other tokens on those networks add 0.5%. A help article dated 2022-09-15 says a payment may take a couple of days. Bill pay is for US users.

What is Artisan Cash?

Artisan Cash, which makes this site, pays a bill from a USDC balance, and the biller is paid in US dollars. It lists more than 100,000 billers, takes a processing fee of 2% plus $2.50 that goes to the processor and an Artisan fee of 0.5%, and the receipt says usually within 2 days. On a $725 bill, $745.63 leaves the balance before any network fee, and what paying a bill costs works more examples. It suits someone who holds USDC and has a biller that will not take a card. It is open by invite, and you can join the waitlist.

What does each route ask of you?

The exchange route needs a verified exchange account and a US bank account in the same name, as Kraken requires. A crypto card needs an account and an application in the card company app. BitPay asks you to join a waitlist for now. Bitrefill says US customers verify identity and proof of address before bill pay, the address only once. Spritz says its consumer sign-up verifies most users in under a minute, once. Artisan Cash needs an invitation and an identity check.

Which routes pay rent?

BitPay and Bitrefill list rent on their pages, subject to the notes above. A Spritz help article, dated 2022-12-21, says to add your landlord as a bank account with routing and account numbers. The exchange route pays rent from your bank. What about an American Express bill?

American Express says on its payment help page that credit cards and debit cards cannot be accepted for its card bill, and the page points to a bank account. The page does not mention prepaid cards, so ask American Express before you rely on a crypto card for it. The exchange route works, since you pay from your bank. How do you choose?

Start with what the biller takes and where your money sits.

  • Money already in a bank. Pay from the bank.
  • Biller takes a card. A crypto card is a direct path, within its load limits.
  • Biller will not take a card. Choose between the exchange route, which is often free in fees and takes several steps and days, and a bill pay service, which skips the sale.

How was the list put in order?

The exchange route and the card come first because they need no new bill pay service. The four bill pay services follow in alphabetical order. Artisan Cash makes this site, so read its entry the way you would read any company describing itself.

What does the list leave out?

It does not cover every service. Coinbase is not described, because its help and card pages could not be read on 2026-10-07. Other bill pay services exist, and a service that is not listed was not read for this page.

Artisan Cash is for people in the US, and it pays US billers. It is open by invite while it grows, and you can join the waitlist.
